The Golden Ratio in 2025
How ancient mathematics still applies to ultra-modern structures — and where the golden ratio genuinely helps versus where it is retrofitted marketing.

A ratio, not a formula
The golden ratio — 1:1.618 — has been claimed as the secret behind the Parthenon, the Mona Lisa, and every other classic of Western culture. Most of these claims are retrospective. The ratio is a mathematical relationship, not a formula for beauty.
That said, the ratio does something specific: it produces divisions that the human eye reads as balanced without appearing symmetrical. Used consciously in architecture, it can be a useful tool. Used unconsciously as marketing, it is just a story.
Where it works — proportion
The ratio is most useful in setting proportions: the width of a window against the height, the reveal of a stone slab against the joint, the height of a ceiling against the floor plate. In these decisions, the golden ratio produces divisions that read as calm without being obviously calculated.
We use it as a default check. When a proportion feels wrong, applying 1:1.618 usually reveals the correct answer. When it feels right without adjustment, we leave it alone.
Where it fails — imposed geometry
The failure mode is applying the ratio to a plan that does not want it. A rectangular villa on a rectangular site does not benefit from a golden-ratio plan; it benefits from a rectangle that suits the family's use. Forcing the ratio at the plan level produces awkward rooms and wasted circulation.
The ratio works at the level of visible proportion. Above that scale, it is one tool among many and should not dominate.
Windows and openings
Window proportions are where the ratio most obviously earns its keep. A 1.618:1 window is quietly satisfying in a way a 2:1 or 1:1 window is not. We use it as a default proportion for punched openings, adjusted for site-specific constraints.
Frameless glass walls escape the ratio entirely — they are proportions of the room, not of the window. But every mullion, reveal, and jamb detail can benefit from disciplined proportion, and the golden ratio remains our first check.
Ceilings and floor plates
Room height to plan width is the largest single proportion in any residential space. A room that is 6 metres wide reads correctly at approximately 3.7 metres tall — a 1.618:1 relationship. A room that is 6 metres wide and 2.4 metres tall feels compressed; a room 6 metres wide and 5 metres tall feels lofty but not intimate.
This is not a rule. It is a starting point that reliably produces spaces that guests describe as feeling right — an outcome that clients pay attention to, whether or not they know why.
Stairs and treads
Stair proportion is another quiet application. The classic 175mm rise and 275mm going is close to the golden ratio and is the reason it feels natural to climb. Deviate significantly and the stair fights the body.
We use variations within a narrow band: a slightly gentler rise for older clients, a slightly steeper rise for space-constrained urban conversions. The proportion holds; the specifics adjust.
Composition and facade
On facade composition the golden ratio is a useful check but not a determinant. A well-composed elevation balances mass, void, and material in ways that resist reduction to a single ratio.
We test facades against the ratio as one of a set of proportional checks — often alongside the root-two ratio and the octave — and let the strongest overall composition win, whether or not any single ratio is strictly satisfied.
The honest answer
The golden ratio is a useful tool for certain kinds of proportional decision, particularly at the scale of the visible detail. It is not a formula for beautiful architecture, and any studio that markets it as such is selling story more than substance.
