Infinity Pool Engineering

The weight, water pressure, and structural discipline behind a rooftop infinity edge. Why the pools that photograph best are the ones engineered most carefully.

The pool as engineering problem

A residential infinity pool contains between 30 and 120 tonnes of water. On a rooftop, this concentrates a load that requires structural augmentation far beyond a normal roof deck. On a cantilevered terrace over a hillside, it introduces overturning moments that must be resolved through foundation design.

The photograph — water disappearing into a distant horizon — is the reward of a much larger engineering programme than most clients realise.

The infinity edge detail

The infinity edge is a weir. Water flows over the edge into a catch trough below, which returns it to the pool through a filtration and pump loop. The visible detail is a razor-thin edge; the invisible detail is a substantial concrete trough and a variable-speed pump.

The trough must be at least 400mm wide to prevent splash-back, sloped to a drain point, and detailed with a stone or tile facing that continues the primary pool material. Anything less and the visible reality falls short of the photograph.

Rooftop structural augmentation

A rooftop pool almost always requires structural reinforcement — additional steel beams, thickened slabs, and reinforced foundations. On adaptive reuse projects the augmentation can add fifty percent to the engineering cost of the entire building.

This is worked out at concept stage, not after. A rooftop pool added to an existing structure post-design is one of the most expensive changes in the entire construction budget.

Waterproofing and leak detection

A rooftop pool is a permanent test of the waterproofing membrane below it. A single membrane failure can damage every ceiling and finish in the storey below. We specify multi-layer membranes with independent leak-detection sensors between layers.

Every rooftop pool we deliver includes an accessible plenum below the pool basin, wired for leak detection and drainable if a fault occurs. This is expensive and mandatory. There is no substitute for it.

Thermal and evaporation control

An open rooftop pool loses 3 to 5 percent of its water per week to evaporation in a warm climate — significant enough to require automatic top-up systems. It also loses heat overnight, requiring insulated covers or continuous heating.

We specify pool covers that retract into a concealed edge slot, so the cover is invisible when in use and easy to close when the pool is not. Insulation of the pool shell — often overlooked — halves the ongoing heating cost.

Water chemistry and filtration

A luxury infinity pool cannot smell of chlorine. We specify UV filtration systems with minimal chemical dosing, ozone treatment where appropriate, and continuous flow filtration that turns the pool over every four hours.

The result is water indistinguishable from a natural spring — clear, odourless, and gentle on skin. Clients who use their pool daily notice the difference immediately.

Lighting and night composition

The infinity pool is one of the most photogenic elements of a luxury residence at night. Underwater LED lighting, tuned to 2200K or 2700K rather than the standard cool white, produces water that reads as warm and inviting.

Perimeter lighting — often integrated into the pool copings — outlines the shape without illuminating the water directly. The combination produces the archetypal composition of a warm pool against a dark landscape.

The rooftop pool as gesture

A well-engineered rooftop infinity pool is one of the strongest architectural gestures available in contemporary luxury residential design. It brings water to the sky, extends the living space vertically, and produces the single most photographed moment of most projects.

The engineering is unglamorous and largely invisible. Getting it right is what allows the gesture to survive its first storm, its first freeze, and its first decade — reading in year twenty exactly as it read on the day of handover.
