The Rise of the Wellness Wing
Cryotherapy chambers, hyperbaric rooms, and cold-plunge courtyards are now standard in ultra-luxury villas. A guide to designing wellness infrastructure that actually gets used.

Wellness is now infrastructure
The private wellness wing has moved from novelty to expectation. Cryotherapy chambers, hyperbaric oxygen rooms, red-light therapy suites, and cold-plunge pools are now specified alongside the kitchen and the master bath.
This is not vanity. High-performing clients — founders, athletes, executives — have integrated recovery protocols into their daily lives and expect their primary residence to support them without a trip to a clinic.
Design the ritual, not the equipment
The failure mode of a wellness wing is a room full of expensive equipment that no one uses. The solution is to design the daily ritual first and let it dictate the architecture.
A typical morning ritual might be: sauna, cold plunge, meditation room, breakfast on the terrace. If the architecture supports that sequence in a single continuous journey with the right light, temperature, and acoustics at each step, the ritual gets used. If any step requires walking through the family kitchen in a towel, it does not.
Cryotherapy — engineering the cold
A whole-body cryotherapy chamber requires a dedicated plantroom with a liquid nitrogen tank, ventilated exhaust to the exterior, and a floor drain for condensation. Interior temperatures drop to −110°C for two to three minutes per session.
Safety detailing is critical: oxygen monitoring, emergency stop, and a supervisor's window with a clear line of sight. The chamber itself is often surfaced in white lacquer and warm oak — a deliberate contrast with the extreme cold inside.
Hyperbaric — the pressure room
Hyperbaric oxygen chambers operate at 1.3 to 2.4 atmospheres, delivering pure oxygen through a mask. Room installations are heavy, need reinforced slabs, and require a dedicated compressor and oxygen plant.
The room around the chamber should be quiet, warm, and neutral — a place to spend an hour reading. We often specify low-level dimmable lighting, book storage, and a discreet speaker system tuned for classical music.
Cold plunge and hot pool
The traditional contrast bath — a hot pool at 40°C and a cold plunge at 5°C — is architecturally simple and biologically effective. We integrate both into a single courtyard, often with a rain garden or planting between them, to create a genuinely restorative outdoor space.
The engineering discipline is thermal isolation. The cold plunge cannot draw heat from the hot pool. Independent chillers, insulated shells, and separate circulation are non-negotiable.
Red light, sensory deprivation, meditation
Red-light therapy panels are now specified in dedicated rooms with tunable LED arrays, adjustable panel positions, and thermal ventilation. Sensory deprivation float tanks require reinforced floors, dedicated water treatment, and complete acoustic isolation from the rest of the house.
The meditation room is the anchor. It should be small — 12 to 20 m² — with a single low window, natural materials, and no visible technology. It is the room clients return to more than any other.
Air, water, and light quality
Wellness is not a room; it is a systemic quality of the house. HEPA-grade air filtration on every zone, reverse-osmosis water treatment at every tap, and circadian tunable lighting across all primary spaces multiply the effect of the dedicated wellness rooms.
A villa that only performs on wellness metrics inside the wellness wing has missed the point. The whole house should measurably support the resident's biology.
The wellness audit at handover
